Are RFID wristbands waterproof?

Why the material decides

Every RFID wristband has two parts: the chip and antenna that your lockers, gates and tills read, and the band that holds them on the wrist. The chip has no battery. What matters is whether the chip is sealed inside a material that stays intact when it gets wet.

In a silicone or vinyl band, the chip is sealed into the band itself. In a cloth band, it sits in a separate card tag, and whether that tag is sealed for swimming varies by product. Single-use bands carry a chip inlay inside the band material. That is why two bands with the same chip can behave very differently at the pool.

Our wristbands and water, band by band

The table below uses only the water wording from each product's specification. Where a product says nothing about water, we say so rather than guess.

Waterproof and showerproof are not the same thing. A showerproof festival band copes with rain and a quick rinse; it is not a band to swim in all day. For pools, spas and waterparks, start with the bands described as waterproof, then narrow down by fit and how long guests keep them.

Chlorine and salt water

Pool water and sea water are harder on a band than fresh water. Of our wristbands, only the one-piece Pool & Waterpark Wristbands are specified as chlorine and salt resistant as well as fully waterproof. They roll on over the hand, have no clasp to come undone in the water, and come in diameters from child to adult XL.

Other bands in the table are waterproof, but their specifications do not make a chlorine or salt claim. If your guests spend the whole day in treated or salt water, tell us how the band will be used and we will advise on the right choice before you order.

If a supplier quotes a chlorine rating for a band, ask what it is based on and whether it applies to the band, the chip seal, or both.

What we don't publish

We do not publish an IP rating, a number of hours under water, or a lifespan for any wristband. Wear depends on how a site uses the bands: pool chemistry, sun, how long each guest keeps a band and how bands are cleaned between uses. A single figure would not describe your site.

The practical test is your own pool, lockers and gates. Ask us about trying bands with the chip we propose before you place a full order, and test them in the conditions your guests will use them in.

Caring for reusable bands

Reusable silicone bands are the ones to plan a cleaning routine for. Our Classic RFID Silicone Wristbands are made for exactly this: closed bands with the chip sealed inside, suitable for cleaning and reissue to staff, members and repeat guests.

   Collect bands at the end of use

   Gather bands at checkout, at the exit or when a membership ends, so they can be checked before anyone else wears them.

   Clean them to your own hygiene routine

   Clean bands in line with your site's hygiene procedures. Tell us what you plan to use and we can confirm it suits the band you order.

   Check each band on a reader

   Tap each band on a locker or desk reader before it goes back into stock. A band that does not read, or that is torn or split, should be retired.

   Keep spares on hand

   Hold spare stock in each size so the desk can replace a lost or damaged band on the spot.
