What type of wristband should you use for your event?

By James Keltner, Owner · Last reviewed

The short answer

Choose by how long the band is worn. Tyvek suits a single day or night, fabric bands with a one-way slider suit multi-day festivals, and silicone suits water and reuse. Add RFID when you need fast scanning, zones, cashless payment or bands you can cancel; for a simple one-day entry check, a plain band may be enough.

Start with your event

Four questions settle most choices: how many days the band is worn, whether it will get wet, whether you will reuse it, and what your access or cashless platform needs to read.

Which RFID wristband to choose, by type of event

  • One day or one night: a club night, party or day pass

    Choose
Tyvek or single-use paper RFID bands
    Why
The low-cost choice. Tear-resistant, light, and closed with tamper-evident adhesive
  • A short event on a budget

    Why
Quick to produce, printed in one or two colors, with a card tag and one-way slider
  • A multi-day festival

    Choose
    Woven or polyester fabric bands
    Why
Showerproof, comfortable for days, and locked on with a one-way slider
  • Near water: a pool party or waterpark

    Choose
    Silicone or vinyl bands
    Why
Waterproof, with the chip sealed inside
  • Reused by staff, members or season-pass holders

    Why
Durable and reusable, with nothing to cut off
  • Printed per guest at a check-in desk

    Why
Names, dates or barcodes printed on the spot, and the chip encoded at the same time

Whichever band you choose, the chip inside is matched to your access or cashless platform. Our guide on which RFID chip to use for event access control explains how.

Fabric vs Tyvek vs silicone

Most event wristbands are one of three materials. Each has a clear job.

Fabric, Tyvek and silicone RFID wristbands compared

  • Best for

    Fabric (woven or polyester)
    Multi-day festivals and VIP areas
    Tyvek
One-day events, club nights and day passes
    Silicone
    Water, reuse, staff and members
  • Closure

    Fabric (woven or polyester)
One-way slider on a printed card tag; adjustable versions for reuse
    Tyvek
    Tamper-evident adhesive with security slits
    Silicone
Closed band, clasp or slip-on; nothing to cut off
  • Water

    Fabric (woven or polyester)
    Showerproof
    Tyvek
    Survives rain
    Silicone
    Waterproof
  • Printing

    Fabric (woven or polyester)
Design woven in or sublimated edge to edge, plus a full-color tag
    Tyvek
Full color or one color, numbering and barcodes
    Silicone
    Printed, debossed or color-filled logo
  • Typical order

    Fabric (woven or polyester)
    Confirmed in your quote
    Tyvek
    Typically thousands
    Silicone
    Confirmed in your quote

Fabric bands feel like part of the event rather than a ticket. On woven wristbands the design is woven into the strap, so colors stay sharp through days of wear and rain. Polyester festival wristbands are printed edge to edge by dye sublimation, so photographic artwork and fine detail come out sharp. Both carry the chip in a PVC card tag, which gives you a second printed surface for a logo, number or QR code.

Tyvek is a paper-like synthetic that will not tear and is light enough to forget you are wearing it. With an RFID or NFC inlay inside, it is the cheapest way to give every guest a scannable band for one day. It is not made for a week of wear or swimming.

Silicone is the most durable choice. A closed silicone band is suitable for cleaning and reissue, and pool and waterpark bands are fully waterproof and resist chlorine and salt. For a festival, silicone suits staff, crew and reusable passes more than one-off tickets.

If you need hands-free entry lanes, long-range UHF wristbands are silicone bands read from several meters away.

Do you need RFID?

Not every event does, and it is better to know before you ask for a quote. A plain band, or a band with a printed barcode, does one job well: it shows staff that someone has paid. RFID earns its place when the band has to do more.

RFID vs barcode wristbands for events

  • How it is checked

    Barcode or plain band
By eye, or by scanning a printed code in line of sight
    RFID wristband
Tapped on a reader, or read hands-free with UHF
  • Copying

    Barcode or plain band
A printed code can be photographed or photocopied
    RFID wristband
Each chip has a unique ID that the platform checks
  • Lost bands

    Barcode or plain band
    Cannot be switched off
    RFID wristband
Can be cancelled in your platform
  • Zones and re-entry

    Barcode or plain band
    Checked by color, by eye
    RFID wristband
Checked by the platform at each reader
  • Cashless payment

    Barcode or plain band
    No
    RFID wristband
Yes, where your cashless platform supports it

RFID is worth it for multi-day festivals, events with zones or VIP areas, cashless bars and vendors, and any event where fake or shared bands are a real cost. Our guide on how to stop wristband sharing covers that in detail.

A plain band is probably enough for a single-day event with one entry point, no cashless, no zones and no re-entry, where staff only need to see that a guest has paid.

Need plain bands with no chip? We don't sell plain non-RFID wristbands: every band we supply carries an RFID or NFC chip. For a one-day event that only needs plain bands, a local print shop or an online wristband store will serve you faster.

Questions buyers ask

  • Can fabric wristbands get wet?

Woven and polyester fabric bands are showerproof, and the chip is sealed in the card tag. For swimming and all-day pool use, silicone or vinyl bands are the waterproof choice.

  • Can wristbands be color-coded by day or zone?

Yes. Tyvek, single-use paper and silicone bands can be color-coded by day or zone, and fabric bands are printed in full color, so each ticket type can have its own design.

  • Do you sell plain wristbands without a chip?

No. We supply RFID and NFC wristbands only. For plain bands for a one-day event, a local print shop or an online wristband store will serve you faster.
